I found 2 possible homes I want to buy, but before I choose I wanted to see how safe it is. I know there are websites where you can check this stuff but I think I’d prefer a formal report. Something from the police. Can I go to the local police station and ask for a crime report in the area?

Yes.
You can start with online tools like CrimeMapping.com, CityProtect, and SpotCrime which display recent crime incidents on a map.
More detailed or official data you can consult your local police department’s website (or local sheriffs department ) or public information office.
Other options include FBI’s Crime Data Explorer for national, state, and local statistics.
I tell clients to also consider supplementing online data by visiting the area yourself, checking ( in person or online) for community engagement, and looking at trends rather than single incidents.
Lexi’s nexis community crime map is online and easy to use.
