I pay over $200 a month for UHC which only covers 1 annual visit a year, with no labs and no complaints, just 1 well visit. Anything else must go toward my over $8k deductible, which I don’t imagine I’ll ever meet. I only see my PCP maybe 4 times a year, and have routine labs checked twice a year regarding my thyroid (take 1 thyroid medication.) I’m doing cash pay at my PCP (who does take my insurance) bc it’s cheaper than billing it toward my deductible, while paying $200+ monthly for nothing. The biggest reason I have the insurance I guess is in case my husband or I are in an accident and on life support or something crazy. Im looking for advice/suggestions for insurance. I’m even more concerned for 5 years down the line when I begin to try to start a family/ need care through pregnancy and infant check ups. Thanks in advance!
I’m a healthcare worker, using insurance offered by my employer, and it covers nothing until I meet my $8k deductible, which I do not ever expect to meet.

It’s crap for sure. The best advice is pack as much into your HSA as you can afford until you need it for the kids or whatever.
Pregnancy/infant check ups would be considered preventative and there for no cost to you (assuming it’s an ACA compliant plan).
you’re in a crappy position. Your preventative care is probably covered, but you have a large deductible plan. Was that the only offering? A $8k deductible is absurdly high.
Why I say you’re in a crappy position is, usually folks can get a subsidy when applying for ACA policies, but you don’t get subsidies if you’re offered a healthcare plan thru your employer.
Not sure what state you are in but I use the MA health connector to get insurance- it’s not great but it’s def better than that. Might be worth checking out your alternative options. Open enrollment starts in November I believe!
I had an accident and needed surgery. Trust me 8k sounds like a drop in the bucket after I do saw the 80k surgery bill. PT was easily another 15k for the next 3 months.
Health insurance in the US is literally a scam. My wife works for a large auto/home insurer in the US so we “get” health insurance through them. We have $12k deductible and pay over $600/month for a family plan. It just went up $110/month when it renewed last January.
It’s a complete joke and what are our options? To get an even worse plan through the private insurance marketplace?
In top of it you need to fight with the insurance company and watch them like a hawk to make sure they aren’t over charging or charging for something that should be covered.
There is ZERO rational argument against a universal healthcare system. Like NONE. I’ll never understand the idiots that cry “but it will increase our taxes!” YOUR ALREADY PAYING FOR IT! AND ON TOO OF THAT YOU HAVE TO FIGHT WITH THR INSURANCE COMPANY TO MAKE SURE THEY AREN’T SCREWING YOU EVEN HARDER.
COMPLETE SCAM.
You have a high deductible plan. If you were able to get a plan with a lower deductible, you should expect your premium to increase to (more or less) cover that deductible difference, or at least a good chunk of it. So if your deductible were $4K instead of $8K, you might see a monthly premium increase of up to $350 (on top of the $200 you’re already paying). In other words, now you’re paying $200+/mo for catastrophic coverage (accident, serious illness, etc.), but you’d be paying $600+/mo in premium for “normal” coverage. The insurance companies have no intentions of losing money by offering you more coverage without charging enough to cover their costs of providing that additional coverage.
You can test this by seeing what insurance with the type of deductible and coverage you want costs on your state’s ACA marketplace. If your state doesn’t have one, use the federal ACA marketplace at healthcare.gov.
I have the same garbage plan, except my deductable is only $5K
and Im paying $400 a month for that.
its basically a policy for major events.
its a total ripoff and thats why Luigi is a hero to alot of people
