Hi! We recently bought a car and we’re in NYC. We have minimum liability insurance. A friend of ours was driving to the airport to pick us up. A cab driver crossed / swerved over cones into our friend’s lane (he had no right to cross, hence the cones placed) and it resulted in a collision. Our car rear-ended the other driver – he was completely at fault. Our friend was flustered since he hasn’t been in an accident before and forgot to take contact information. Thankfully, this was at JFK, and there was a police officer. He took a report of the incident which states that the cab driver was not supposed to cross over the cones. Now, with airbags deployed, our car isn’t safe to drive around. We got a $15K bill from the mechanic. How do we go about this? We’re just totally clueless. Does anyone have any recommendations for an attorney that could help us with us? We haven’t been able to use the car in two weeks and it’s causing a lot of inconvenience since we were supposed to move upstate with our dog last week. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Why do you need an attorney? Just call the taxi’s insurance and make claim. Your vehicle is a total loss.
Alternatively, if your friend has auto insurance that has collision coverage, then your friend’s insurance may be able to cover the car and the insurance can pursue the taxi.
You should have made a claim against the other party’s insurance. The insurance information should be located on the police report. Make a claim, answer their questions, and send them the police report. They will likely ask for proof of damages.
