My ex and I used to own a house together in Michigan. We divorced and she was supposed to buy me out. Her lawyer put a 20k lien on the house, and she got a federal conviction that added another $135k lien on the property. Our daughter is going to college next year, and my ex says she cannot pay because she is still paying off the liens. Can I do a title search to determine if the liens are still there and how much is left? If so, how? I have looked through the County website and have seen a lot of mortgages and lien paperwork, but it is confusing. Can I get a professional title search done?

You can go to the Register of Deeds office. Or search online, print out what you find and then go to the RoD office and ask them. Would be cheaper than getting a professional one done.

    2. You can see the liens and the initial amount, but there is no way to see what is still owed, until the liens are either released ($0 balance) or they are refinanced.
