I'm really wondering how many people have gained substantial wealth (say at least a million dollars) investing in stocks. How did you do it? Did you invest conservatively in broad market ETF's? Did you stock pick your whole portfolio? Did you have a core of certain investments and a few picks? Did you get a ton of stock options at your job? Did you get a tip from the bathroom attendant at the club? Tell us your story!

Have you made (and not subsequently lost) a lot of money investing in stocks? Did you do it slow and steady, taking a few risks, or just bet the kitchen sink? What's your story?

Depends how much you’re starting with.

I buy large cap dips. This year I bought TSLA and UNH near the bottom. Patience was key, but a lot of it was luck. I got 25% return on my TSLA before selling and recently sold UNH for a 20% return. Each time I dumped in about $200k. Taxes will suck, but I’m up almost $100k pre tax.

I bought MRK yesterday morning. Put in $150k. We’ll see in the next couple months if I’m 3 for 3 this year!

Absolutely never do this with small caps or companies that have excessive debt. Losses are one thing, but a company bankruptcy could set you back a long time.

Invested mainly in SP500 and Tech ETFs over the last 10-13 years. Over $2M in market gains. Never sold so it’s all long term capital gains.

    3. Stock pick. ~$50k in NVDA 2007 by listening to and believing in CEO. I’ve sold a bunch over time, but still hold a good chunk of those shares. Been posting on r/NVDA_Stock since 2016. Jensen was a guy who tells it straight, hasn’t done me wrong yet. When he says he’s going to sell into a Trillion$ TAM, I believe him.

    4. The first $100k was really hard and took many many years. I made the next $100k in less than a year after that.

My advice is just buy and never sell. You are not good enough to beat or time the market. Expand your horizon from 2 months to more like 5-10 years and you will make money and be less stressed.
