Hi all,

Can someone tell me how far back insurance companies in NJ look at moving violations?

Is it 3yrs or 5yrs? Most people are saying 3yrs but I feel it’s 5yrs

I used to have dirt cheap auto insurance up until last year (2024). 46yo male, spotless record (never any moving violations), never any accidents or claims and excellent credit (over 800 score) and on avg my car insurance premiums would be around ~$600 per year. This was for full coverage (collision & comp)

Back in Aug 2022, I received my first moving violation which was a “Delay of Traffic” summons in NJ which is a zero point ticket. The police officer supposedly cut me a break and said this is a zero point ticket and is only $75.

After reading online, everyone said “it’s a zero point ticket” and just pay it and move on with your life, which I did.

Fast forward to 2024 (last year) Geico caught wind of that ticket and now my rates have TRIPLED. On avg, I’m paying about ~$1,800 per year on a vehicle.

Geico told me regardless of zero point ticket, it’s still considered a “moving violation”

My question is, how long is it before this ticket falls off my record in NJ and will my rates ever go back to what I was paying or will I forever be rated at this new rate?

Kinda sucks but I learned my lesson to NEVER just pay any sort of moving violation even if it’s zero points because at some point insurance will still find out. Always make sense to just fight it and hope a lawyer can plead it down to a parking ticket .

If anyone can help answer, would appreciate it.
