The carbon emissions of China may have peaked as it rolls out solar and wind power at a “staggering rate”, according to a leading data scientist and author.

The world’s biggest emitter is hugely reliant on carbon-intensive coal, but has been meeting so much electricity demand with green sources that its emissions fell in the first half of this year.

“China’s emissions are now falling. I don’t want to be the one who calls ‘this is the peak’, but I think there is the chance China’s peak emissions are coming very, very soon,” said Hannah Ritchie, a researcher at the University of Oxford and Our World in Data.

If Chinese emissions peaked, the world’s emissions would peak for the first time, Ritchie said. The milestone would be a sign that worldwide efforts to tackle climate change, explored in her book, were working

Next teaming up with the EU to sanction those who fail to reduce emissions.

Foreign emissions are an act of aggression. Where trust fails to address the issue, there must be consequences
