Would love to hear your story. Specifically, did you grind it out until your FI number? And if so, did you regret not taking any career breaks / sabbaticals /mini retirement?
We're a mid 40s couple close to our number but feeling the urge to quit jobs and take a year to travel, but also tempted to stay the course for another 2-3 years, but wondering if we'll regret not doing more fun stuff before we start aging…less gracefully.
Also feel free to share your FI number / annual burn and cost of living area if you are able. Thanks
Any DINKs that retired in their late 40s/early 50s?

44 and 43 DINKs, retired recently. 12M net worth. We did a lot of cool stuff during the grind, it was about the journey for us. RE was never a goal, it just happened due to some luck and a diligent investment plan. 200k annual spend, VHCOL. No regrets.
You should be totally healthy from 50-60, so I don’t see a reason to give up your current fastest route to FIRE.
We will be DINKs that retire at 50. We have 4 years to go but could retire now if we needed to, but I have a pension that could use some padding.
We will live on $7k/month until we hit 401k/pension time, then our income will go up to $40k/month+. We should have $5mm in our retirement accounts come time, plus my pension. All of our siblings are well off so we can die with zero.
House is paid off and we are budgeting for 2 new cars at 49 to run for 12-13 years.
We are grinding for 4 more years and we are out. There is zero doubt on our end…no “one more year” or anything. I will work until my wife’s 50th (I’ll be 50 and 9 months) and we will have a joint retirement blow out. I can’t wait for that last 9 months. There will be so much time theft.
We just reached our FIRE number this week 🙂 End of last year, I was laid off after I reached my personal FIRE number, so I decided just FIRE. My husband has a low stress wfh job that he likes so right now it’ll just be financial freedom.
I don’t think we have any regrets, we take vacations, eat out whenever we wanted to and have pretty much any gadgets/material things we want. I save money for FIRE but that’s based on my current spend, I’m not going to flip a switch and spend drastically more in retirement.
My aunt who’s in her late 60s, walked the Camino de Santiago earlier this year and she now traveling in Argentina. So you can still have fun when you are older.
DINKs, retired 2017 at 47/46, only regret we didn’t do it sooner. We traveled and did month long vacations and talked about when prior to quitting but it took seeing a fee based financial planner lay it out to show us we were good.
We sold our house and travel full time so COL changes based where we spend our time. Haven’t hit our maximum spend to date.
Edit: we used to say as long as you have your health, it won’t matter that you are a bit older. No longer sure that’s the case, we are both healthy but have noticed we get tired easier nowadays then we did when we first started. We still do a lot of active stuff but it’s noticable that after having an all nighter on a beach in Thailand it takes a bit longer to recover.
