In two years, I will reach 20 years of combined military service (15 active duty and 5 with the National Guard). I’m currently serving on active duty, but I no longer feel the desire, purpose, or drive to continue. I want to begin planning my transition out, but I’m unclear about whether I qualify for retirement at this point. Can someone provide me with the information I need, or at least point me in the right direction?

You will be eligible to retire, but your pay will start at age 60 minus part of your active duty time in the National Guard.
Push through the last 5 years and get the Active Duty retirement to collect benefits right away.
How many points do you have? You need 7200 points for an immediate retirement.
You’d be eligible for a reserve retirement, which you wouldn’t be able to draw until 60.
At 15 years AD it’s damn near criminal to get out. Just stick it out, you’re giving up way too much at this point. And btw, it should really be at least 15.5, since your BCT and AIT will count as AD time as well, and any activations/deployments/schools while you were NG should add to that as well. If you haven’t done so already got a 1506 done to capture all that time(
Active Duty with contract ending in 2?
Or
NG currently on AD orders?
Either way do have VA Claim or Pending?
Understand situation. Know many who left at 17+. Some joined Reserve/Guard later in life to get pension at 60.
I thought TAPS was very helpful (2023). Helps you understand the retirement process. You can go before submitting a retirement request. I recommend finding an active duty base to attend the course. Good luck, if you can stick it out the healthcare and pension are really nice.
