I’ve searched this sub and all the answers I see say that it is needed in case another driver is at-fault and does not have sufficient insurance to cover my losses. But I think my losses are already covered by other insurance?
Damage to my car -> I have Collision
Bodily injury -> I have medical insurance
Loss of wages -> I have SDI & LDI
What is the extra benefit I get from the uninsured motorist coverage?
(I live in California)
Why do I need Uninsured Motorist coverage?

Collision is when you’re at fault. Also, medical insurance will often refuse to cover auto accidents and will refer to auto insurance for payment.
1. Collision – If you have UMPD you can also avoid paying a deductible. In your state you actually purchase a “UM Collision Deductible Waiver” when you have collision and it’s usually like…a few bucks, total no-brainer.
2. Health Insurance – UM is also going to cover pain and suffering, future medical expenses, and emotional distress. You will not be getting any of that through health insurance.
3. Lost Wages – Pretty comparable, sometimes you can receive more from UM.
Because nobody(80-90% of people) carry enough insurance if any. The percentage of uninsured drivers is staggering, of the 3 accidents I have personally been involved in, in my lifetime, 2 of the 3 have been uninsured.
Your insurance isn’t going to cover everything. They typically go after the other persons insurance. Your policy may have limits on what they’ll cover if an under insured or uninsured driver is the cause of the accident.
What if your teeth get knocked out etc. Dental insurance never covers much.
Yes I was just rear ended by someone with state minimums. I have 500k with a 1 million umbrella to save my ass. I need a 2 surgeries one for a torn labrum in my arm and maybe neck and back surgeries also. I have 2 steroid shots in my spine soon and scheduling my shoulder surgery soon. Buy the max insurance you can afford you never know when life hits you at 50 mph. I just just coming back from grocery shopping with my whole family.
There’s is something that those other insurances don’t cover… pain and suffering. If you don’t care about being compensated of you are severely injured by someone, then go without UM.
Got rear ended, was excited guy had insurance… Was not happy to learn they had $5k limit. Super happy I had uninsured coverage
Check your limits. Collision only goes up to ACV of the vehicle, UM limits can go much higher. You say bodily injury is covered by your medical, but pain/suffering is not covered here. Do you plan on having other occupants in the car with you? UM should cover yourself and anybody else in the car with you up to your policy limits.
