I just started a job that has me flying in, and out of a site every week. The departure/arrival terminal is on the outer edge of the airport, and next to a busy road that connects to an arterial main road.

Yesterday, as I was waiting to disembark the plane I looked at the prices for an uber. My location was registering as a nearby residential street, not the airport, and the cost to get home was $18. I didn't book it because because of the location skew.

In the arrivals lounge, I went to book the uber and the price changed to $65 😳.
I decided to take a walk down to the main road and check the prices again. At the intersection (maybe 800-1000m away) the price was the same. Since I only had a carry on bag I decided to continue walking. 200m further and I was outside a business, not airport associated, and the price dropped to $18 again. It took 4 minutes to get my ride. And I saved enough to cover my return uber next time 🤣

I avoided the exorbitant Uber airport tax

    1. Not sure which country your from.

country I reside – there’s buses that you take to the next suburb – price becomes normal. Otherwise.. same issue as you.

country I’m from – same issue as you — you need to exit out of the airport..

I think everyone did this thing where airport == pay higher.

    2. Nice, I’m glad it was possible/safe for you to take that short walk and get the non-price- gouged ride. Sometimes the price jumps wildly between “Business” and “Personal” rider accounts, too.

    3. Most airports charge taxis and rideshares a fee for picking people up, thats what youre seeing, probably plus a few $$

    4. We do that all the time.

Also, don’t buy a SIM card at the airport. Do eSIM or buy in town.

Why are you paying out of your pocket for a business trip? Your job should cover that 100%

Unless you are trying to save that corporation the costs….

    6. Why are you paying for your own uber if you are travelling for work? I also travel for work and couldn’t care less what the uber costs, as it’s a billable expense.

    7. This applies to any high volume place… there’s a sports venue about 1km from my office and whenever I go I take uber 2 and from there… it’s 50% cheaper and less traffic

Review your contract, I’d be very surprised if they didn’t have to cover your transport to and from the airport.
