I’m almost at 12 years of active duty. If I get out at 12 years does my AD time count towards retirement if I start a government job? Like 12 years USMC and 8 years mailman for a total of 20 years. Does anyone know if that’s how it works?

It counts towards years of federal service yes, but as a government civilian your retirement date is based on age, not just years of service like the military. You’ll be at least 57 when you retire as a gov civilian
Just do your 20 AD. Way more worth it.
You “buy” your time into FERS which is the federal civilian retirment system. Check out their website lots of details go along with this.

You’ll have to buy back your military time. If you separated after 12 years should be pretty easy. If you were medically retired it’s another ball game and a little more difficult.
