    NAMES REDACTED

This is Progressive's attempt to verify that we have accurate information for your policy, and it is your responsibility to provide and maintain accurate policy information as outlined in your insurance application and policy contract. This includes providing names of all individuals who regularly drive your vehicles as well as those that are old enough to drive and live in your household. Failing or declining to do so may result in a claim denial and/or policy action such as rescission or cancellation. We will not make changes to your policy currently based on this information unless requested by you, but we reserve the right to take action in the future.
To update your policy call us at 833-496-0676. Our hours are 9:00 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. EST, Monday through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. EST Friday. Or you can add a driver by going on-line.
We appreciate having you as our customer and look forward to hearing from you soon.

The names mentioned are my parents, I don’t live with them, I live in another state, WV, and they live in PA. My legal address is my home in WV, my license is a WV license, I am employed in WV, my vehicles are registered to my address in WV, my home is solely in my name, and my parents don’t drive my vehicles (as to do so they would have to drive themselves 2 hours to drive one of mine). I am on their Allstate insurance, as I DO regularly drive their vehicles, but they do not drive mine.

So I guess my question is, do I need to do anything or is this just a stern finger wagging to remind me of my risk? GEICO, Erie Insurance, State Farm have never said anything about this to me other than asking if they live with me at initial sign up for a policy. Is progressive seriously implying they are going to charge me for people that don’t live with me or drive my cars?

Progressive sent me a scary letter, it’s unclear if I need to do anything or not?

    1. Don’t ignore this message. Call the company at the number they gave you and let them know exactly what you posted here. You live in a different state than your parents, you have a WV license, and your vehicles are registered to your home address. And that you are listed as a driver on their policy because you do occasionally drive their cars.

If you don’t do anything, then yes, they could charge you for people who don’t live with you and don’t drive your cars.

There’s nothing scary about the letter. They are trying to verify all licensed household members because many people don’t discloae them properly. Your records are still linked with your parents’. Reply to Progressive and explain the situation. If you ignore the request, yes they will absolutely add those people as rated drivers on your policy and you will be charged the extra premium.

    3. No, don’t ignore it.

I would also be cautious about contacting Progressive over the phone. If you do, get the full name of who you talked to and their email address. Or respond in writing to the person who wrote that letter, or both. Explain what you have explained here and ask for an acknowledgment that all is well.

If you don’t get a satisfactory conclusion send an email to one of these corporate executives.

    4. Do not ignore this. Insurers regularly run reports to identify extra drivers at a household. They were either thrown off by your presence on the AllState policy, or they found something else to suggest you share an address with them. If you ignore this, they’ll add your parents to your policy, which will jack up your rates. And then you’ll have to haggle to get them removed. This is standard with many carriers. Just call Progressive, explain the situation, and ask them what (if anything) you need to submit to not have your parents added.

Somehow it showed up you are on your parents policy. A phone call should resolve this but I’m not hearing good things about them lately so be prepared.
