Approaching retirement and got a brief on the Survivor Benefit Plan and I intend to take it. I’m struggling with one specific aspect, and that’s if I should do the Spouse and Kid Options or just the Kid option. Normally I wouldn’t want just the kids option, except that I have a disabled son (autism and intellectual disability).

On OMB form 0704-0569, Data for Payment of Retired Personnel, block 38 has the option to designate a Special Needs Trust. Has anyone gone through with this option? My understanding of the strategy:

    1. By not naming spouse as beneficiary, there way less money removed from my retirement payment.
    2. My disabled son could get survivor payments for his entire life because he is disabled. Payments wouldn’t stop at age 18.
    3. The special needs trust would get him money without him being disqualified for other disability benefits because of that income.
    4. My wife could be the person in charge of the trust and she would obviously benefit from it because our son is likely to live with her at home his whole life.

Anyone done this before? Unless I’m very certain that I’m correct, I’m just going to do the Spouse+Kids option and accept paying more every month.

Following, as I have a special needs adult myself and have been considering SBP as a potential way to ensure their own security down the road. Thanks **OP** for posting up this question!
