Running into a situation that I can’t seem to find an answer to in my homeowners insurance policy and hoping someone can help.
I moved into a new house yesterday that had the laundry room in the basement remodeled right before the sale. The night of my move-in I did a load of laundry and came downstairs about 30 minutes later to find that the floor was flooded. Turns out, the washer drain tube was not properly installed.
My question is, does this count as sudden and accidental which is covered or gross negligence/poor maintenance which is not covered?
Would homeowners insurance cover improper washer installation that caused damage?

Negligent
It should be covered. The question is do you want to file a claim on day 1 of your policy. Can you get some fans and a dehumidifier in there and dry it out?
What is the amount of the financial loss?
Flooded from a single load of laundry?
If less than .5k damage. I’d not file. Rates will go up. Risk not having coverage
This article seems to say it would normally be covered. https://www.allstate.com/resources/home-insurance/damage-caused-by-contractor
If a company installed it, you go after their insurance.
