I consult for startups, and I see this interesting trend among many entrepreneurs and developers. The pattern is very similar, when they see someone else using AI to build a product, integrate AI in their product, or create content, they dismiss it as ‘just AI crap’ – "Oh you know they are just creating a thin wrapper over an API or copying AI gunk from place to place."
Yet the same people when they have to build something or create something turn to the same AI and consider their own work valuable.
I’m not judging anyone here, just find it curious. Do any of you see this pattern too?

I think your AI is crap, and so is mine…
Always reminds me of Homer and get rich quick schemes
Oh I know I use is also crap. It is just sometimes I am too lazy to write code but I can still chat and make the ai right the correct one.
I think part of the problem is that it’s become a market of lemons, it’s really hard to judge quality right now. You can count the genuinely strong foundation models on one hand (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, maybe Grok).
But the apps built on top of them vary wildly. Some, like Cursor, actually add real value. Others are basically just a system prompt wrapped in a UI and marketed hard.
What’s worse is that some of those low-effort apps still find success, kind of like the early App Store days when fart apps made millions. That gives hustlers hope and leads to even more low-quality clones flooding the space.
The ai hype is not going to end well. But, I think it gives a good opportunity for people to create and sell real things.
