I’m a medical doctor and I’ve always worked inside clinics or hospitals, but lately I’ve been thinking about opening a small practice on my own. I honestly have no idea where to start, especially with the administrative side, costs, paperwork, and all that. It feels exciting but a bit overwhelming. If anyone here runs their own business or has gone through something similar, what do you think I should keep in mind before getting started? Any common mistakes to avoid or things you wish you’d known earlier? Any advice would really help.

Thinking about opening my own practice , any advice before I jump in?

first thing to lock in is the boring stuff, not the cool branding, get clear on legal setup, insurance, location rules, and what equipment you actually need to start small, talk to one or two solo doctors in your area and ask what surprised them the most, most say the admin load is heavier than expected, also build a simple system for bookings and follow ups so you don’t drown in calls, start lean, focus on trust and word of mouth, and grow only when the patient flow is steady

    2. Opening a practice is doable just remember you’re building a business as much as a clinic. Keep it lean in the beginning, get solid admin/billing systems, talk to a CPA who knows medical rules, and set up basic marketing (Google Business, local SEO). Most new practices fail from poor workflow, not lack of patients. Start simple and scale as you learn.

    3. I have background in medicine also but I run robotics company I can tell you that running a medical practice is not in the realms of real entrepreneurism (new products and tech development) but make sure to get a good accountant especially tax accountant. Other than that it should be very straightforward.

      Accounting firm here.

Set up your systems. This is important. You’ll do lots of demos with sales people lol.

Get involved with associations in your field and make friends. They will let you know what’s going on in your city and help with your journey. This is critical.
