Hello all!
Just a good data point that others will hopefully be able to benefit from! I’m 19 y.o. and have been heavily intrigued by finances since I’ve turned 18, a big part of which is credit and credit cards. $50,000 income.
These were my current cards (as of last month):
• Amex BCE opened 9/24 with $18k limit (went from 6k->18k)
• C1 Savor opened 1/25 with $11k limit (went from 10k->11k)
• Fidelity Visa opened 3/25 with $2.5k limit (had 11k limit, voluntarily dropped to 2.5k because of high amount of credit)
• Chase Freedom Flex opened 8/25 with $6.5k limit (initially denied for fraud, called and was approved on the phone)
So I was shopping for a travel card to add more credit, open another account to let age, and hopefully take advantage of some travel benefits as I’d like to start taking a trip or two a year. I was preapproved for the Chase Sapphire Preferred, I figured $95 annual fee with a $50 annual hotel credit isn’t bad. Boom:
• Got CSP 12/5/25 $12k limit (with 75k point SUB!)
So, I have an AF now, I’m 5/24, have the CSP and CFF, but I’m missing the CFU for the trifecta and I’d have to wait another 9 months before I was out of 5/24. I figured before I had a statement close on the CSP, to apply for the CFU and see what happens.
Applied online, got hit with a fraud check, so no instant approval. I call to check status and get the 2 week message (which is a good thing?) then after 3 days it went to the 7-10 day message (which is bad?). So I decided to get connected with customer service to find out, and I was denied for too many accounts or too much open credit. I had to call reconsideration 3 different times before I got connected with someone that could actually help me, and I explained that I didn’t need MORE credit, that I just wanted the CFU to maximize points gains for my new CSP and requested that they take $5000 from my CSP to open the CFU. Was told acquisition would handle it and get back to me within 3-5 days. I actually got a call later that same day and boom:
• Got CFU 12/16/25 $5k limit
They didn’t take the $5k from the CSP, they just opened a new line with a $5k limit. They also gave me the SUB for 30,000 points!
I’m a very happy camper and am now, almost exclusively, operating within the Chase ecosystem with the trifecta. I plan to just let my other 3 cards age and help build my credit.
I hope this helps anyone in a similar situation!
Happy holidays!
Got Chase card despite being 5/24

There have been rumors about Chase moving away from 5/24. It kind of makes sense as they’ve put Amex-style lifetime language on all the Sapphires and Inks
I got my Robinhood Gold card in early November so that was at 5/24 but because the gold card hadn’t reported to the bureaus yet, I also got the Chase Sapphire Preferred since Chase can only see I have 4/24 cards on my profile. Pretty cool you’re able to bypass the rule.
Congrats!
For what it’s worth, you were not over 5/24 because Chase exclusively goes by what is on your credit report, and your CSP hadn’t been reported to the bureaus when you applied for the CFU. While there have been DPs of 5/24 loosening, your example was possible even when 5/24 was a strict rule.
You were 4/24 when you applied, not 5/24.
Your post title is not accurate.
You’re off to a great start, and the fact that you know about this sub is icing on the cake. However, 3 cards with Chase in 4 months is a very high velocity, in order to avoid adverse action I’d recommend not applying for any new cards for at least 6 months.
Especially at your age, you’re moving too quickly.
