I recently was pondering if I should keep the Sapphire Reserve. As most people, I hate to lose credit card credits but then I thought about the dining & hotel credits. Everyone has busy lives but my wife and I struggle to have Date Nights. Keeping the Sapphire Reserve will provide more motivation to make those date nights happen. Adding in the Amex Gold & Amex Plat & for Q1 Chase Freedom Flex – Date Nights are basically free.

    Sapphire Reserve
-$500 Hotel Credit -The Edit($250 every 6 months)
    -$300 Travel credit
-$10 Lyft Credit per month($120 per yr)
    -$300 Dining Credit ($150 every 6 months)
    -$300 StubHub($150 every 6 months)
    -3x on dining
    -4x on hotels booked direct
-8x on hotels booked in chase portal

    Amex Gold
    -$100 Resy Credit($50 every 6 months)
-$10 Uber Credit per month($120 per yr)
    -4X on Dining

    Amex Platinum (Personal)
    -$400 Rest Credit($100 per quarter)
    -$200 Uber credit($15 per month)
    -$600 Hotel Credit($300 every 6 months)

    1. I recommend you go and make a list of restaurants you and your wife would want to go to that are also on the Resy/Chase OpenTable lists.

    2. Someone just commented on a thread this morning or yesterday that the CSR was making him a better husband.

I can see the tagline now: Sapphire Reserve – Viagra for your wallet.

Funny, my wife and I had the same discussion after the CSR and Amex Plat were refreshed. Amex Plat is probably better for date nights than the CSR, because FHR properties require only a 1-night stay to get the $300 credit, and there are a LOT more Resy restaurants than there are Sapphire Table restaurants.

But the idea is the same….use the credits for things you “intend” to do but struggle to make the time for.

We actually use the Amex Hilton Aspire for this purpose. The free night certificate covers the room, the Diamond benefits cover the breakfast, and the $200 resort credit covers parking and dinner.

Venture X works for this too, with the card’s $300 travel credit covering the room. And if you book a Premier Collection hotel, the $100 onsite credit covers a good chunk of dinner, and breakfast is included in the rate.

      Happy wife…
