I was born April 14, 1987, and I'd like to know what my newborn self should have been buying back then. 🙂 Value stocks? Growth stocks? Index funds? If you could go back to that year, what kind of stocks would you buy? Just a fun little thought experiment.
The year is 1987. What stocks are you buying? (Thought experiment)

Enron.
80’s time frame you’d probably be buying bonds and the obvious big name companies of the time like IBM, Kodak, Exxon…
Msft
Well that depends if I am allowed to sell it or not.
not a thought experiment
a very basic quiz of whether someone can backtest
Nintendo.
Not blockbuster
BRK
JFC…
That fruit company.
$0.35
I’d probably go with a mix of tech growth stocks like Microsoft and Apple, sprinkle in some value stalwarts like Coca-Cola and Johnson & Johnson, and just hold a chunk in an S&P 500 index fund. Let time do the magic.

1987? I’d go to Hawkins.
Xerox
MSFT. Parlay that to NVDA
IBM
Sun Microsystems, Cisco, and Inktomi just like I did back then. Well I missed out on Cisco. Then I’d buy Apple in 1993 just like I did but I wouldn’t sell.
BRK.A is the obvious choice.
Off the top of my head after that: MSFT, MCD, XOM, GE, KO
Msft and brk till appl and nvda are avaiable. Monster is also great after 1990?
I would hold the cash until after the crash in October 1987, then invest it, maybe a few months later.
BCPC.
Or I’d be buying T-bills so I can go all in on NVDA after its IPO.
Blackberry (RIM) founded in 1984 but it was only private investments before the IPO in the 90’s.
Being an early investor in the late 80’s and timely exit in late 2000’s would have made you a multi-billionaire.
