Long term this isn’t sustainable at all. You would have no private investment with investor payback being effectively banned.

Funny that people called Kamala a socialist when this is more socialist than anything the Biden admin did.

    2. No dividends and stock buybacks for defense companies with controls on executive pay packages… and no buying stockpiles of homes.

First, most of the big companies in defense already pay dividends. Does he know that? And I can’t wait to see what the SCOTUS says.

      Taco Time?

    3. You always hear the same question, when Trump does stuff like this, why on earth are US companies so chummy with him. They’ll call some minor regulation a communist take over but Trump can ban dividend or stock buybacks and they don’t say a word.

The truth is, they prefer the Trump style. Massive corruption and being able to basically buy whatever you want from Trump is worth his occasional grandstanding.

These defense companies know that they’ll get their due. There will be bigger and more contracts and Trump will let them get away with more.

No buybacks at least is good idea. Find something (economically) productive to do with the money CEOs, like investing in the business or creating a rainy day fund, or improve employee compensation, or at worst just pay out normal dividends.

Honestly buybacks should just be banned in general.

    5. He’s a populist doing populist things. He’s not a conservative. It’s fascinating that so many traditional conservatives fall all over the guy.

      > Shares of General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman each fell about 2% following Trump’s comments

Aaaaaand there it is. Now he and his family will buy a bunch of shares, Trump will chicken out, share values will rise, yada yada yada… profit.

Edit: just checked the markets. GD down 3.4%, LM and NG both down 4.8%. It’s TACO time!

    7. “It was not initially clear what impact or binding force, if any, Trump’s announcement would have on major defense companies’ financial activities. The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for additional information.”

No shit. Raise a bill in Congress or fuck off.

What- is Trump just giving edicts now? I bet there will be no follow through- as always- and these defense contractors will continue to do whatever they want. Trump is full of shit. Literally. Just check is diaper.

Here’s the rub: President Donald Trump said he “will not permit” defense companies to issue dividends or stock buybacks **until those firms address his complaints about the industry.**

That’s it. So, with just a little media literacy and reading comprehension, you’ll note that this story doesn’t imply what the title says *at all*. It’s just another threat.

*SO WHAT DOES THE ORANGE KING WANT?*

He wants “**firms [to] speed up their production of military equipment** and address his other complaints about the industry”

      *WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?*

It MEANS they’re low on munitions and Orange Man doesn’t like that because they have ‘plans’. The End. Jesus CHRIST

I would like to propose a sub-wide moratorium on “Trump says” posts? These really aren’t leading to meaningful discussions of the domain of economics, as there are no actual, specific policies proposed in any of these. These are all just basically press releases for someone’s social media posts.

    11. the really sad thing is. All stock buybacks should be made illegal. it single handedly has destroyed most of american prosperity from the perspective of wages keeping pace with productivity, and companies actually investing in R&D/capital investment. (and their employees) —why do any of that when you can just buy back stock to juice the share price/side step paying taxes…. and then lay off 10% of your workforce to juice the stock price.

but… cheeto hitler is just using this as a lever to extract bribes/obedience from defense firms.

    12. So doesn’t the US government also profit for all foreign defence sales? And they are trying to force NATO in buying their weapons from the US?

    13. CharmingCrust on

I believe that is called Communism. Free markets follow supply and demand. Free markets do what they want with their money, visions and strategy.

Threatening the military industrial complex might not be the smartest move. They don’t sell lemonade.

    14. Anything to distract from murdering US citizens and raping children.

Hell never do any of the things hes been spouting off last 2 days. Hes terrified its all coming down.
