I couldn’t afford a diaper genie, and didn’t want to toss them in the garbage as it would smell, and didn’t wanna go outside every time she pooped to throw one out especially in winter. So I got a roll of doggie bags (scented helps) and put her dirty diapers in there, and right in the regular trash it went. No smell. When I was in a pinch and ran out, I got some produce bags (the free ones at the grocery store that you put all your apples in) and used those until the scented doggie bags came from Amazon!

Cheap hack to avoid buying a diaper genie!

    1. A good way to contain the scent is too get a small trash bag, make sure the diaper is in the bottom (corner is great), twist the bag twice right at the diaper, turn the bag inside out, and twist again. You’ve just double bagged.

I use this for any smelly items, and also for liquids.

    2. I live rurally and would put a garbage can outside my kid’s window and just chuck it out there. Stinky in the summer but we don’t spend any time there so it was fine

    3. My mom would just sprinkle baking soda in the trash can every time she changed one of our diapers when we were still small. The trash can had a lid and was changed every two-three days.

I wrap anything with potential to stink in plastic bags, then put it in the garbage. Sounds like you do the same thing.

      Smart and inexpensive

If you truly want too be frugal. Cloth diapers. Couple hundred bucks can get you through 3 or 4 children.

It helps if your wife was a farm girl and is not easily grossed out by such things.

How much are the doggie bags? I feel like over time you’re probably better off getting something like a Ubbi… I think mine was like $50 on sale with the registry completion discount. Babies go through SO MANY diapers.

I have a cat litter box and live in an apartment building, so it’s not convenient to go outside every day to dispose of the scoops.  I put a box at work in the lunchroom with a note for everyone to allow me to recycle their Ziploc bags.  I get enough of them that I never have to buy any.  When people get concerned about the food crumbs inside going bad, I just tell them what I am doing with them….. they smile and say OK.  😺

    8. Back when my kids were young, I put the poopy diaper in a Kmart bag twisted it tight and tied a knot. I know a lot of folks no longer get plastic bags.

Honestly, I had a diaper genie and hated it. I always felt like I had to push the damn diaper in there too hard and it was all squishy 🤢

Plus you had to always fold it all up contained to have any chance putting it in there – which for blowouts was not easy to do without getting literal crap all over your hands…

I just used the rolls of sacs that were designed for on the go. They have deodorizer in them to help with the smell. I chucked them in there, tied a knot and then took it out to the trash bin…when it was cold, I will admit to chucking a bag out the door onto the porch in the middle of the night now and then and dealing with getting it to the bin in the morning…or even just leaving it bagged in the nursery.

Slightly different but same company IIRC but I got a litter genie and it’s great, but the refills are pricey. Turns out there’s knockoff brands out there and you just need the plastic container from a branded one to use them. They’re not quite as good at keeping scents in, but for a fraction of the cost it’s well worth it IMO

    11. I save empty and rinsed ziploc-style food bags (frozen fruit & veg, crackers, dried fruit, etc.) for when my infant grandkids come to visit. Seal diapers inside and they can go in the regular kitchen trash without risk of bad odors. I use those bags for forgotten leftovers that might stink, too.

I’m seeing people sell them nearby from me starting at 5$ seems worth the hassle. Don’t have kids but I do use a litter genie and it is worth the lack of smell and effort of keeping the smells in

    13. Just a heads up, once they get on solid foods, the poops get so stinky that even in a doggy bag, they still smell horrible. We have an ubbi and put every poop diaper in a doggy bag and the can still about knocks you out when you change the bag.

    14. I work at a kids consignment store and we sell diaper genies for $10, and have had the same ones in the store for weeks because nobody buys them.

If you think you can’t afford one, check a kids consignment store. They’ll usually have a bunch of unused liners too. Also Buy Nothing Facebook pages. Between the Buy Nothing page and the kids consignment store I’ve probably spent $300 on ALL of my baby stuff for my almost 6 month old.
