I took out $17k in student loans. In 2013. Been paying the minimum required since 2017, about $180 per month. Never missed a payment, except not paying during Covid. When that moratorium got suspended, I still had about 14 K left!!! I woke up one morning, tired of being 50 and still having sl not go down. So I decide to give it all I got.

Got a job as a PSE at USPS, working crazy shifts- 10 hrs/ 6 days a week for 6 months and making 2 large payments each month.

    Exhausted? Yes

Fueled by anger @ Nelnet? Yes,

Had no life for 6 months? YES!

BUT I finally made my last payment at the beginning of the week. I can’t express how incredible it feels to have these out my life.

Funny thing is that as I started making double payments, my credit score came down about 3-6 points each month. So now I am being punished FICO for aggressively trying to be debt free! 😳 It’s crazy!

I wish someone had stopped me from taking out sl (am not even working with my degree!)

Anyhow- don’t give up. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and its doesn’t have to be a freight train, it can be the light of freedom.

Finally Paid Offs sharing to cheer you on.

    1. Congrats! I know must feel great to have those loans not weighing on you anymore.

The FICO model does seem broken, though. I’ve never missed a payment in my life, however my FICO score is lower now than it was 2 years ago when I had $60k more debt.
