My car was at the dealership for service code 0169 (Oil change, tire rotation, rear diff fluid, and brake inspection). While it was there, a tech took it for a test drive and crashed it.I'm trying to understand the shop's standard operating procedure. For a routine oil change and tire rotation on a car is a road test mandatory? If so, what is the tech actually testing for?

    1. For that list of stuff, a road test isnt automatically required. Most places will just do the service and move on.

That said, some shops do a quick drive anyway just to make sure nothing feels weird after the rotation and that there’s no noises, vibration, brake pull, lights on, etc. It’s more of a “sanity check” than a real test.

If they’re calling it mandatory, I’d ask what exactly they were trying to verify, because for a basic oil change and rotation it’s not something you should expect every time.

    2. Maybe there are a question about the brakes and they discovered their screw up before you did, so they’re paying for the damage.
