The typical response in this community to questions regarding capitalism, socialism, or communism is that those categories are not very useful. However, it seems quite common for sociologists or philosophers to use such terms, are they referring to things that only exist within their theory?
Are members of other fields mistaken to use terms like “capitalism”?

The usual response here is that economists don’t tend to use the terms capitalism, socialism, etc as they’re not clearly defined within economics. That doesn’t imply that other fields lack clearly defined, sufficiently broadly accepted definitions that would make the terms useful internally. I’d ask members of those fields for definitions and see if they’re at all consistent.
