my mom received PSLF forgiveness from PLUS loan conslidated into direct back in 2024. the loan had been active since 2010 but had been paid a bit through myself and her in 2018; but covid pauses happen; then we got out of covid pause and our payment went up to over 600 dollars in late 2023; put in forebances to figure things out; we conslidated the loan in early 2024 which got us in icr / direct loan and $0 payment since my mom agi is super low.

I found out that my mom qualified for pslf after asking a non profit student loan support group about if my mom qualified. explained she works in a public school system in a paraprofessional role since early 90s but she isn't a teacher and doesn't have a pension but she does work more than 30 hrs a week. That org said just to give it a try and see maybe she has credit….so we filled out the PSLF form and her HR at the school district verified her credit. At first it counted her up to 2021 which was wrong…my mom hasn't been working at the school district since 1990; so the hr person resubmitted with proper dates. Then FSA retroactively counted my mom's employment to 2007; then recalculated her to met PSLF with over 120 months.

So from mid Nov 2025 process started for PSLF forgivness; then Jan 9 2026 I see a notice on FSA that ED said it was approved; checked nelnet its approved and I see no balance due; nelnet put a pdf statement saying loan was pslf discharged but didn't state of no refund.

Per FSA / Nelnet they went by the same date as when we conslidated as our PSLF forgivness date. Unsure if they consider the 'conslidation payment' as retroactively we get back or no. Like we conslidated the loan for over 58 or 59k but we had interest accured a lot; Nelnet/Ed forgave about over 63k in debts. But from Feb 2024 to 2025ish we made some small payments in between. I'm just wondering how much of the refund we get?

Do we get what we paid after the conslidation date? or do get the conslidation amount itself plus what we paid. I tried to call for my mom to nelnet and the guy was unhelpful and just said that FSA processes this not Nelnet.

Is my entitled to a 'refund' for student loan (pslf)?

Were the loans in a repayment status after you consolidated or did you guys just choose to make payments?

If they were in an actually repayment status with payments required – then yes, anything after the consolidation they’d refund.

If the loans were in forbearance after the consolidation and you just choose to throw money at them, no, that will not be refunded because nothing was technically due.
