This chart breaks down the Net Worth of US households by age brackets, sourced from the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF). This is widely considered the "gold standard" of wealth data in America, released every 3 years.
Average (Mean): This is the total wealth of the age group divided by the number of people. It is heavily skewed by the ultra-wealthy (the Elon Musks and Bezoses of the world).
Median (50th Percentile): This is the most accurate benchmark for the "typical" American.
25% / 75%: These represent the boundaries of the lower-middle and upper-middle class.
1%: The entry threshold to be in the wealthiest 1% of that specific age group.

Is everyone gonna tell where they are in the table XD
What does this have to do with stocks though
difference between average and median tells you all you need to know about America…
would be interesting to see averages if they removed the top 0.001% (you know, folks almost worth a trillion)
I’m even poorer than I thought!
Is this single-income or household?
“Average is heavily skewed by the ultra-wealthy (the Elon Musks and Bezoses of the world).”
What an understatement. Even 75th percentile doesn’t come close to average for all but one of these groups
I wonder how much of that 40 to 50 bump is inheritance
the difference between averages and medians speaks to the financial disparity in our society. The “K-shaped economy” is real yo.
I am surprised there isnt any negative even for the bottom 25%
I thought this was annual income and freaked out for a second lol
Above median and below average here
If you can measure happiness and overlay on wealth chart, you will lo
Ikely see a negative correlation or a bell curve – saying that there is amount where happiness starts being high ang a point where it maybsrat to fall. If you cannot be wealthy, focus on being happy. At least you get to win something even the ultra wealthy have no guarantee of obtaining.
Anyone know where the raw data for this comes from? Both average and median do poorly with monetary values like this, I’d love to see the stats using the “geometric average” formula (basically average done under a log transform). It gives much less distortion from super high values, without discarding them in the same way median does.
Median at retirement age is about $400k? Christ that’s sad
The top 1% net worth of 18-24yo of $653k is the grossest number for me because it’s clearly trust-fund baby money. At least in the late 20s, 30s, 40s there’s a chance that it was self-made money from high-earning profession or starting a business.
I haven’t gone to the source, but I find it highly unlikely the median household under let’s say 29 has a positive net worth *at all*. Most people are still paying student loans at that point. They also have car loans, and if they’re really lucky, a home loan.
I’m 9x the median of my age group
I thought I was killing it. I’m only lightly punching it, apparently.
People will say that this isn’t stocks related but important to see this data, the concentration of wealth has been amplified to an insane degree over the past 15 or so years. We’re long overdue for a major recession.
Just goes to show that you can’t outwork the insane wealth generation that comes from already being wealthy in the modern system. It’s broken, and I really think it’ll come crashing down at some point in my lifetime.
This is coming from a 1%er btw, so I’m well aware of the mechanisms by which it gets hoarded and transfers down to the next generation. Not trying to flex or anything I think it’s very important for discourse that everyone is transparent. I inherited 95% of it so not gonna pretend it’s a product of hard work.
