I used Privacy.com for many years, I always liked it, especially for bouncing payments on free trials when the time expires and I'm not sure if I want to pay for the full service.
However, I guess one of my cards was left open without a spend limit, which is highly abnormal because i usually use one-time cards or make the limit very close to the amount I intend to spend. And, I've been really busy and not diligent about checking the account it was attached to (which I don't use for daily spending and thus don't usually review transactions.)
So yesterday I discover that over the past 5 months, someone has been making fraudulent transactions with that card, in hugely varying amounts ($0-9000) the vast majority of which have bounced or been declined. Then there are slews of repeat transactions in the same amount, when the fraudster figured out which "merchant" the card was locked to (which is not the one I made the card for, so….)
All of these are clear indicators of fraud, but I never was notified about it. A few times recently, and then dramatically over the past 5 days, they have gone ham and made dozens of identical transactions. Only until these payments started declining (because my bank account is seriously overdrafted) did Privacy alert me. I hadn't spent any money so I looked into it and find this 5 month long history of fraud attempts – successful and failed. It's almost $3500 total. My credit union also didn't flag the repeat transactions in the same amount as fraud. It's crazy.
worst part? they are impossible to get a hold of. I've called their listed customer service # multiple times, goes to a default answering machine, sent multiple emails. nothing. when you dispute a transaction, you have to respond to each individual charge with "evidence" in order to file it. then, Privacy says it will take up to 90 days to resolve + 3 days to notify you of their decision.
pretty messy for a company whose reputation is protecting you from fraud.
any advice? i have never dealt with this before. worried my bank is just going to refer me back to privacy… looking for anyone whos had success resolving a dispute through Privacy.com, or anyone who has dealt with months-long fraud disputes.
Dealing with card fraud from Privacy.com… any advice??
