I will likely be going through a divorce soon, and while I am not happy about it, I am trying to make the best of a crappy situation by using the opportunity to see the world for a few years before I settle back down. I work remotely, so I can live anywhere with a reliable internet connection. I plan to be a digital nomad in 1-3 month stretches and basically just need a home base for my stuff, my mailing address, and to return to in between adventures.

    Must Haves:

    – As cheap as possible rent for a studio or 1 bedroom. Ideally under $600 a month.

    – Safe enough that I can leave the place unoccupied for months at a time without too much worry that someone will break in.

    – Not a high likelihood of natural disasters that would put my stuff at risk, such as tornadoes or wildfires.

    Bonus Points:

    – On or nearby the West coast. I currently live and work in Washington state, so minimizing the distance to move and travel for occasional work stuff.

    – Some element of interest that would make the few months a year I'd stay there worthwhile, such as beautiful hikes, interesting landmarks, or a cute downtown.

I don't care about all the usual stuff that makes these tiny nowhere towns unattractive – Resources, walkability, politics, school districts, etc. are all irrelevant. I just need somewhere cheap and safe and not utterly terrible.

What is the cheapest place to rent that is still relatively safe in the USA?

Do you intend to own a car? Many places that inexpensive are likely to be in places that require driving

There’s some places in WA that could fit this but only if you rent through like Craigslist and were willing to split with a room mate. I lucked out first try and found a entire top floor for a house with wood floors, loft ceilings (like the wood ones but not the dated kind I forget what they’re called!) and the best room mate ever for $900 a month. (Don’t live there anymore but that’s a hint of what you can find if you look!)

But with that said, even if you find a deal like that the general pricing of things like groceries, etc will have to be taken into account and we’re not always the cheapest in that arena.

      Lots of free hikes though!
