Not sure if this is a thing in other states, but in California we have something called the CARE program that takes 20% off your gas and electric bills. You have to be income qualified or someone in your house must receive some kind of public assistance, but even if you don't qualify based on income or public assistance, you still might qualify under the NSLP.
Many schools in are community provision schools in the National School Lunch Program, meaning all the school kids in the community receive free breakfast and lunch because there are so many low income students that they give it to everyone instead of having to apply individually. If you go to the website where your school lists the menus, there should be a letter on there you can download and use to apply to the CARE program.
Even though California is giving all kids free lunch now, this program and provision still exists and can still help you save a little money each month.
