I tend to go above and beyond when someone does me a favor in these scenarios because I don’t want to ever feel like I’m taking advantage and want to be a good friend/family member. But I’m learning people don’t all think the same way? How does it play out in your circles? Have you ever had someone not chip in at all (for a decently long drive, tolls, pay for parking, etc)? Thanks.
If people are carpooling and they want to give the driver gas money, do they use the “federal mileage rate” or whatever that factors in car wear and tear or just their share of the cost of gas?

I say “how much do you want towards petrol?” And then pay that much
If it’s a regular thing, you talk it out among participants of the carpool.
The ehole point of the carpool is to alternate to each others vehicles so you never have to do this
This sub is a trip sometimes. Just sayin’. I get a lot of legit tips but some people overthink things beyond my ability to comprehend.
You’re overthinking it. In matters of friends and family, penny and diming is not the way to go. For me, I follow this personal rule:
Staying in the same state? You drive your car, I pay for the gas, we split the snacks.
Cross country trip? We take turns paying for gas, I pay for the snacks.
