Shop around with an independent broker.
Good on you for shopping before buying the car. I see too many times on this and other subs people only find out about the insurance cost AFTER buying the car.
Buy an old cheap car and skip the comp and collision
Over time if you keep your record spotless – zero tickets, zero claims – and you regularly shop around, you’re likely to see better rates as you get older. Make sure to check insurance costs for any new or used car you plan to get and consider insurance costs in your purchase. Check if any of the carriers you’re obtaining quotes from offer discounts for things like defensive driving courses. Also, get your credit score as high as you possibly can – a low credit score is a significant factor in high premium rates in Louisiana. You might also consider where you actually live – insurance is higher in certain zip codes than in others, so if you plan to move, check how that would impact your rates before moving.
As far as what you can do right now, besides shopping around, not much. You’re a young driver in a city. Insurance costs are going to be relatively high.
