This lady from church when we lived in CA would let all of our kids come over once a week in the summer. She had a gorgeous in ground pool with water slide and diving board. The kids would swim for hours with their friends. One day my son spilled his Cheerios and she said, throw those over the fence to my chickens. Then she proceeded to tell me about all the scraps her chickens would eat. We started bringing a whole bin of scraps each week for her chickens. The kids had fun feeding them and watching them peck at it, and she was delighted for the extra nutrition for her flock.

Growing up, my parents didn’t make much money so free and frugal activities were the norm. One of the best ones I have is going on walks at the local park with them in the fall and collecting chestnuts that had fallen from the trees. We’d bring them home and my dad would roast/braise them for us to eat.
My mom would also make some of my clothes from scratch using patterns and frequently mended them as well. I loved watching her do this and then getting to pick a patch for her to sew onto my clothing when it developed holes haha.
On a road trip with my parents in the Pacific Northwest, we pulled over and bought a big sack of cherries from a roadside stand. Cherries didn’t grow in our part of the country, so they would have been very expensive at home. We got stopped at a state border and told that the produce couldn’t cross with us. We all stood on the side of the road and gorged ourselves eating every last cherry out of that sack on a warm summer day because our mom wasn’t about to let a single one of those lovely bites go to waste. My brother and I still talk about that day.
We had a single ac unit for our house in the 80’s so during the summer on Saturday’s we would spend our day at Smithsonian museums. My brother and I would take turns picking, my mom would pack a lunch and we would spend all day in glorious ac.
That’s so wholesome ❤️
