EU’s Von der Leyen: Return to Russian energy would be “strategic blunder” | DW News

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned against returning to Russian oil and gas, despite soaring energy prices during the US-Israeli war with Iran. She was addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Von der Leyen called reviving Europe’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels a “strategic blunder” and urged investment in homegrown energy sources, including renewables and nuclear reactors.

    1. If things get worse for them… After many meetings they decide to buy more from Russia.. I would hope Russia refuses to sell it to them and then cut them off completely

    2. She is right, but let's not forget, that the price per kWh electricity is bound to the gas price. The EU needs to redesign the merrit order in a way that oil and gas has fewer impact on electricity. Electricity prices will soon surge due to the strong ties with gas prices. When the merrit order is redesigned, THEN she would have a strong point. Now it is kind of weak.

    3. America betrayed the European countries. First by expanding Nato east and therefor initiating a Russian respons and forcing us to choose their side therefor loosing Russian energy to wich we are now vulnerable to any change, they knew this would hit us the most. The US is NOT our friend!

    4. EU talks a lot about oil prices but refuses to condemn the US for starting a war. I say this to the world, dont listen to EU, buy Russian cheap oil and take care of your own people. EU cant do jack since they are just puppets to the US. And the US dont even like them. I thank god most government here in Asia still trade oil with russia, might even be more now with the war US started.

    5. Ignoring existing reality will be a bigger blunder. If you don't stabilize the economy, transition to green energy will be further delayed. Open markets for both Russian, Iranian and Venezuelan energy. Being prices down and invest in green energy.

    6. "Blunder" is too soft a word. I would say that energy pricing has to change. We must reward every person who purchased a "renewable only" electricity plan. And people who get their electricity from fossils need to carry the full consequences of their blunder. It must be illegal to raise prices on customers who have chosen correctly. But, returning to russian gas would be betraying all values of civilization; treason.

    7. Dear Europe, stay the course, without energy and weapon independence you will never be able to tell the USA and Britain you won't fight pointless wars. This is your best chance in centuries of history (perhaps EVER) to continue working together, and get stronger…"together"..this bubble is only money…and it's a small price to pay for maintaining your sovereignty…and proving your worthy of it. In a couple of decades you will be able to tell the Trump's of the world to "pound sand".
