Hi all,
TL;DR – Is there any issue with switching your insurance if you have a claim still open?
I recently had my car stolen, and subsequently wrecked, and it was declared a total loss. I was actually pleasantly surprised with the valuation, and all major aspects of the claim have been completed, received and cashed check, got a replacement car etc. The claim is still listed as open, I believe because they have to finalize auctioning off my scrap old car through a scrap yard, but I've confirmed there's nothing left on my end that I need to do.
I have Progressive, and despite the reasonable total loss valuation, I am considering switching up my insurance because 1. My premium is higher than many competitors, and I was actually thinking about switching before all of this and 2. I had an overall bad experience with the claims process, with my claims representative basically accusing me of hiding my stolen car in a different state because a random police scanner photographed my license plate number from a different state on a different car, and said it was mine. Is there any legal, logistical, or monetary concern if I were to drop Progressive and sign up with new insurance, despite my total loss claim still being technically open due to them not finalizing the scrap sale yet?
