Hello folks!

I'm 26 years old, credit score of 702. I want to open a travel credit card, because I am hoping to some to get some cash back/point rewards for an upcoming trip to Barcelona. It's my first big travel with friends, and I'd like some cushion for expenses while I'm there.

I was going to open a chase freedom unlimited, but saw there is a foreign transaction fee, which would suck cause I will definitely be using this credit card for majority of my purchases while traveling.

I'm nervous about going for the chase sapphire preferred, to avoid FTF (foreign transaction fees) but it seems like there are great benefits. with a $95 annual fee, Earning 75,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. I definitely will, since my trip is in two months.

Or I was considering a Capital VentureOne Rewards card, with no annual fee.

Or going for the Capital Venture Rewards with a $95 annual fee, because they are currently offering "$250 to use on Capital One Travel in your first cardholder year, plus earn 75,000 bonus miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening – that’s equal to $1,000 in travel."

Should I play it safe and go for the Capital VentureOne Rewards card, with no annual fee. Or utilize one of the credit cards with a $95 annual fee, and seemingly flashier benefits?

    Appreciate any insights or advice.

I’d suggest an Amazon Visa over a points card (it’s cash back instead)

      – Visa

      – No foreign fees

      – Free, so you can keep it more or less forever with no downsides to you

What cards do you currently have, and how long have you had them?

C1 has a pre-approval tool — if you are pre-approved for the Venture then you are very likely to be approved. Assuming you have some credit history, neither of these cards are all that difficult to be approved for.

Just start off with savor. Then get freedom flex. Then work your way to other cards. Constant changes and nerfs. I’d recommend dipping your toes on all the good cards that suite your needs and interests from the different credit card issuers.

If you want to churn, definitely the limited time $1,000 Venture bonus. Be 100% sure the version you get is a Mastercard – some of these are already being issued on the Discover network.

But for a keeper card for someone looking for a $0 AF solution, the Wells Fargo Autograph. It’s a Visa Signature with no annual fee, no foreign transaction fee, unlimited 3x Wells Fargo Rewards points on dining, travel, transit, gas, EV charging, streaming, and phone plans, and 1x everything else. One of the only free credit cards with direct transfer partner access as well. Sign up bonus is only 20,000 points ($200 if cashed out) though.

Don’t bother with the VentureOne, the 1.25x earn rate is extremely low and this card is generally regarded as one of Capital One’s weakest offerings. If you must get a $0 AF Capital One card then the Savor is a far superior choice. As mentioned before, confirm your offer is for a Mastercard if you must choose a Capital One card at this time.
