early assumption: send more and get more replies. so we increased volume.
didn’t really help.
what actually moved things: narrower ICP, cleaner data, more relevant messaging. volume just amplified whatever was already there.
once targeting improved, replies went up without increasing sends.
learned this the hard way while building my agency.
more volume didn’t fix our outreach. better targeting did

Volume just scales the problem if the inputs are off. One thing that helped me was getting really strict with ICP filters and actually removing decent looking leads if they didn’t fully match. Feels counterintuitive at first, but reply quality improves a lot. Also worth double checking where the data is coming from. Even small inaccuracies compound fast when you’re sending at scale.
Your point about messaging is big too. Once the list is tight, it becomes way easier to write something that actually feels relevant instead of generic. Sounds like you figured out the part most people skip early on.
