A few days ago, my apartment building caught fire, and all units had to be evacuated. From what I understand, it may have been caused by another tenant’s negligence and spread to multiple units throughout the building.

We have not been allowed to return due to the extent of the damage, and I am currently staying in a hotel. I’ve already contacted my renters insurance, which is covering my temporary lodging for now.

Management has told me that my unit was not directly affected by fire or water damage, but that doesn’t account for the smoke that spread throughout the building. There is also significant structural damage, which has made the entire building uninhabitable and displaced all residents.

I’m scheduled to return this week to collect my belongings, even though I don’t yet know where I’ll be living next. I also plan to follow up with my renters insurance again.

I’m mainly trying to understand how renters insurance typically works in a situation like this. Beyond hotel coverage, is it reasonable to expect coverage for things like moving costs (truck rental, supplies) or a storage unit while I figure out next steps?

Also, how do claims usually work for potential smoke damage to belongings, even if there wasn’t direct fire or water damage? How do you actually prove items were damaged by smoke?

More generally, what should I be doing right now to make sure I’m documenting things properly and getting the most out of my coverage during this process?

Any advice or experiences would be really helpful as this is my first time dealing with something like this.
