located in USA, Iowa- filed with my home owners insurance – large hail storm caused danage requiring total roof replacement for my house and detached garage. I have other dwelling coverage for this garage – however the garage is old- like 1900 built cant call it a garage its a "carriage house" bc it predates cars… its rotting and falling apart.
the insurance approved $3, 400 to replace the roof of the garage. with half the payment coming now and the other half of the payment will be issued once I have the receipts that I replaced the roof. The issue is thr whole garage needs to be demolished. it is not worth putting a new roof on a entirely rotten structure. So is there a way I can show l "fixed" the roof to get the second half of the payment? even if i need to use that money to have the garage demolished? I dont want to do anything fraudulent- if I have the roofer replace some shingles and give me a receipt that it was fixed up would that be sufficient?
any advice helps. I dont want yo leave money on the table nor does it make sense to replace a roof on a building that is being demolished anyway.
Can I recoup depreciation payment on a repair that doesnt make sense to do?

Yeah, you can show you “fixed” it by fixing it. Anything else is fraud.

No, that would be fraudulent. You’re not “leaving money on the table” if you don’t replace the roof. They aren’t giving you money to rebuild your 100 year old detached structure.
You said yourself it needs to be demolished and rebuilt. Use the money throw some of your own in and rebuild it. Once it’s rebuilt you it has a new roof depreciation is released
Hard to square asking how to commit fraud while also saying you don’t want to commit fraud
I don’t know how often carriers actually come back out and take a look after repairs, but you really don’t want to use that money for anything else then what it is intended for. Carriers now can take a look at your property by drone etc. So use the money as intended.
Give them the money for the garage back since it needs to be demolished.
