Family member used my credit card unauthorized. It was more than a couple of thousand dollars. I reported it as fraud. However, my claim got denied. It's a lot of money and the family member, they don't have the means to pay me back. Im not sure if i want to pursue legal action because this is a family member… This is very upsetting, I don't want it to ruin my credit and this is just another expense that opened up for me. Is there any other way I could dispute this or am I screwed?

Realistically this is only going to proceed if you are willing to make your family member face consequences – file a police report, sue them in small claims, etc. You cannot simultaneously drop responsibility for this debt and protect the criminal that racked it up.

That sucks so bad and I feel for you being stuck between family drama and your finances. I went through something similar with my cousin a few years back – not as much money but still hurt. The credit card company probably denied it because they can prove you know the person who used it or maybe the charges looked like normal spending patterns

You might have better luck if you can show the bank that you explicitly told this family member they couldnt use your card. Like text messages or emails where you said no. Also if the purchases were completely out of character for you – like if youre a doordasher making normal income but suddenly theres luxury purchases or stuff you’d never buy

The harsh reality though is that most banks are gonna say this is a civil matter between you and your family member. You might need to file a police report to show youre serious about it being theft – even if you dont actually want to prosecute. Sometimes just having that report number helps with the dispute process. Your credit shouldnt get hit from this specific situation but yeah the debt is still sitting there
