I've been hypermiling since the summer of 2023 and have saved a significant amount of money over the years. My guesstimate is over the last 30000-40000 miles this has translated to a savings of at least $300-$400. It's the simple things that save fuel. Driving responsibly can keep MPGs high and money in your wallet. On one road trip down I-94 I realized I can easily increase my fuel efficiency by at least 5% keeping the speed down and the air conditioner off. This also reduces wear and tear on your car and saves even more money over the life of the product. Yes always follow traffic rules and drive safely but these small things can add up fast. I've been crunching the numbers since 2022.

Here's what I have done so far to increase fuel efficiency

    • Drive slower
    • Accelerate slower
    • Naturally coast to a stop.
    • Coasting up inclines and getting a gravity assist on the slope.
    • Letting friction do the work on an off-ramp.
    • Upgrading to LED headlights reduces the load on the alternator
    • Driving a couple feet to the right in a lane to lower tyre friction
    • Parking back-in. And parking in the first available optimum parking spot.
    • Using the air conditioner as needed. BONUS: If you have a vest you can keep an ice pack in it to keep your core temperature low. If you can find a good deal on a tint, that too can keep the load off the air conditioner. We've considered drinking coffee over very long drives so I could excrete additional water. But the savings were marginal at best
    • Cutting down junk in the trunk
    • Losing weight.
    • Planning out drives. If your are intentional with your drive time, you can reduce driving distance and idling times.
    • This one's controversial, but carpool if you can make it work. While efficiency might drop immediately, you are doubling the passenger-miles per gallon
    • Parking in the shade or using a reflector on the windshield. I've found they degrade quite fast leaving chips and bits in your car so savings might be offset by vacuuming costs.
    • Fueling up between 20% to 70% of your fuel tank levels helps reduce fuel weight over time thus increasing efficiency.

Hypermiling is another way you can reduce your fuel consumption and save money over time!

nice breakdown man, some of these i already do without realizing it was hypermiling. the coasting thing is huge, especially when you start timing lights and can just roll up to them instead of gunning it then braking

curious about the driving a couple feet right in the lane though – is that actually measurable or more theoretical? seems like it’d be such a tiny difference but i guess every bit counts when you’re tracking it this closely

also lol at the coffee/water excretion thing, that’s dedication to the cause right there. your honda’s holding up well for 11 years, those things are tanks when you treat them right
