I’m about to file my taxes, and on my W-4, there is a “Y” next to the sectionMultiple Jobs or Spouse Works”, however, I only have one job, and I do not have a spouse.

I am unaware of how long it has been set to this, but I am very concerned as to what that means for me regarding my taxes. AFAIK, it’s been set to Y for all of 2025.

Also, I paid over $20,000 out of $105,000 in federal taxes for 2025. Is this because of the “Y”? For reference, I am netting around $1,870 every paycheck; my coworkers net an average of about $2,500 a paycheck. I cannot figure out why I bring in so much less than them, unless it’s because of this “multiple jobs or spouse works” situation.

I am worried that I will be in some sort of legal trouble because of this, or that there is has been a mistake in my paycheck for over a year now.

I have contacted my HR today, but since it’s Saturday, they most likely won’t get back to me until Monday or Tuesday

Can anyone please advise me on what I need to do to fix this, and if there is any legal/financial troubles ahead of me because of this?

    1. It just means you withheld too much and will get a refund

You fix it by updating your w4 to not have the box checked

    2. You’re not going to be in legal trouble. You basically have just been giving the government too much money. It all gets settled during tax season. Have you reconciled your taxes for 2025 yet? I’m guessing not; you’re probably due a refund.

Selecting No when you have a spouse is actually much worse as it can result in owing a lot of money come tax season (I did this one year by accident, I was not happy).

You can submit an updated W-4 to your employer to fix your withholding. There is no reason to be concerned about legal troubles, as you almost certainly withheld too much for taxes, and will get a tax refund when you file. An inaccurate W-4 is not a crime.
