Hello all. I am relatively new to the credit card game and am looking to take the next step towards improving my setup. I am 22 (turning 23 this year) and work for a stable Fortune 100 company. I am not very savvy in the credit card world and only really got started last year. I currently run the Discover It and Chase Freedom Unlimited. I use the Discover as my catch-all/category spender (currently getting 2% back on all purchases until the intro offer expires in June), then the Chase Freedom is a play to earn 5% on travel while also being able to utilize the 3% on restaurants.
I'm currently looking at cards that could both capture value on food-related purchases, but also start positioning myself to take advantage of point transfers for travel down the line. My girlfriend and I love to travel, and I'd really like to start building a points base for trips we take in the future. I saw that Amex was running a sign-up offer for the Gold card to get 60k-100k in points if you meet the spending threshold. I applied and got the higher sign-up bonus of 100k. I'm heavily considering this card due to the 4x on groceries, with the 4x on restaurants being another benefit too. I already spend in correlation with a lot of the credits, so it'd just be a matter of working them into my month-to-month spend.
I come here because I am ignorant about this world. I have done some research and am considering one other route: getting the Chase Freedom Flex and combining that with my Freedom Unlimited to eventually open and transfer to the preferred card. Since I already have some points through my unlimited, I see this making sense.
I am open to advice here and am willing to answer any questions. Ultimately, I'd like to get a card that I can use on my food spend, but also start to position myself for traveling in the near future. Open to questions + there's some extra info down below :). Thanks!

I’m hesitant to recommend the gold precisely because it doesn’t fit most people’s spending habits, but given that it fits yours, it’s a potent spender and incredibly rewarding. Swing for it then grab the Platinum later down the line. Both you and P2 can combine points ecosystems for outsized value in Amex.
Alternatively, you should swing for a CSP to match your CFU, but I don’t think it beats the Gold in your use case.
