Is there any weight to the idea that Americans paying more for healthcare funds research?

I’ve heard the argument that Americans can’t have taxpayer funded medical care because the very high prices that we pay fund the research efforts for many of these companies. If they had to sell at more reasonable prices, they wouldn’t be incentivized to do research
