“What is true in relative terms is not necessarily true in absolute terms, and what is already true in absolute terms in the US today places the most vulnerable segments of the population at considerable risk.” – Mohamed A. El-Erian

The right wing is taking the US exceptionalism for granted while devolving it into premodern, nationalist politics, degrading the rule of law, enabling widespread corruption, sowing division and toxic politics. All the while expecting the US exceptionalism to just continue, when in fact it is only a result of the modern liberal policies like limited government, individualism / internationalism vs collectivism / nationalism, rule of law and promotion of a rules based world order. Those are the values that built the US dominated world order, its supremacy, its soft power, and its economic dominance. The US has momentum and the habits of the past, but as it increasing abandons the principles that made it the best, while just assuming them to be inherent attributes of America, it would inevitably lead to decline.
