My job shorted me at least 10 hours this paycheck and I can't pay my bills. My manager says it's because the higher up doing payroll is just bad at it. This is a recurring issue with the company, is there any legal action I can take to resolve this and keep it from happening? This is in Indiana.

    1. Depends on your state. Some states have daily penalty (waiting time penalty) when wage isn’t paid on time. You can make a report to your state DOL if a “strong reminder” to the higher ups isn’t getting you anywhere.

i would do all the things to get paid like reporting it to the dol and such and looking up the laws in your state.

however i would start looking for a new job. companies that can’t get payroll correct are not good places to work for. at best they are just incompetent but at worst they have money problems

    3. Have you tried going right to HR/payroll? If I make a mistake, I usually cut a check right there on the spot to cover the net and I add an adjustment into the next payroll to account for it. Ask them to do that or you will need to escalate.

Depends if they fix it right away. When mine makes a mistake they will give you an off cycle paycheck with what you were missing.

    5. did you submit your time sheets on time as requested? if so, someone being bad at running payroll is not a you problem, and your company needs to fix this immediately.

Department of labor. Fill out the paperwork and they will contact the company. Make sure you have proof of the missed time

Do NOT work until you have been paid in full. You should have been paid immediately after alerting the manager.
