(As mentioned in title – I searched up "haircut" + "short haircut" on mobile and didn't find what I mean here)
I have pixie length hair and do not mind it super short or kind of shaggy or somewhere in between. However, I do eventually itch for a trim. I used to have it short all the time and would do Great Clips or whatever and it was fine. Then I had it very long for a few years and eventually started trimming it myself because I didn't want to pay $60 for the full sit-down experience – even though I did respect my stylist's work! Just felt hard to justify the hour long shampoo and everything when all I was looking for was to get rid of dead ends
Now I find myself in a similar position except with very short (for a femme-presenting person) hair. I like who I've been going to, but $50 to maintain a specific length every 8 weeks is not always money I can prioritize. I don't want a buzz cut (cool look but I'm not comfortable wearing it to work), and since it's been years since I've gone to a walk-in salon I'm afraid they're worse (because it feels like everything has gotten worse)
Anyway – I'd love input from those that have been in this spot, any other advice, or if you're a hairstylist I'd be happy to hear your take. I know sometimes a haircut is worth the $$$ but right now all I want is for someone to take the shag off without keeping me in a chair for 45+ minutes when imo it just doesn't feel necessary
Short haircuts but not just a buzz cut

I used to go to the cheapest barber in my city and paid him $15 to run a clipper through my hair. It was cheap but I eventually decided I could go even cheaper, so I bought my own clipper and set of guards. You can absolutely use a clipper to do other styles than a buzz cut. Just use a longer guard on the top and use progressively shorter ones down the sides.
Consider a Wahl clipper and having your spouse cut it.
set and My wife cuts my hair since the barber raised his prices and than demanded a tip he owned the shop. The Wahl hair clipper set was about the same price as two trips to the barber 12 years ago. For ease of maintenance and no silly ego at my age, she gives me a buzz cut a few times a year when it is nice enough outside. Bugs and birds clean up the wind scattered hair.
