“The Statue of Liberty Was Never Meant for America”
Did you know the Statue of Liberty was never originally meant for the United States?
The iconic Statue of Liberty, one of the most recognized symbols of freedom in America, was a gift from France in 1886. But before it stood in New York Harbor, its creator had a completely different vision.
French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi first planned to build a massive statue in Egypt—at the entrance of the Suez Canal. The design featured a woman holding a torch, symbolizing progress and light.
But the project was rejected.
Years later, that same idea was reimagined… and became the Statue of Liberty.
In this episode of Animated Retell History, we uncover the surprising origin of one of America’s most famous landmarks.
👁 Watch till the end and decide—what would it represent if it was never in America?
