I want to continue to use standard paper towels but they are so expensive. I tried buying fabric kitchen towels to cut back on using paper towels, but they seem to get germy so quick . If I really want to wipe down my counter, using paper towels somehow seems more sanitary.
Has anyone switched to buying the old-fashioned unbleached paper towels (Z-fold) that they use in public restrooms?
Did you find that it saved you any money? Thanks…
Has anyone tried to use the unbleached, Z-fold paper towels, instead of the typical supermarket paper towel?

They don’t really absorb as much water as a traditional paper towel.
Try a sponge?
I have been buying z-fold towels by the box since Covid time. I like them. I don’t know if they are unbleached. One box lasted several years.
Buy a large stack of the cloth ones, so you can replace them often with a freshly laundered one.
Save the paper towels for the worst greasy messes (or dropped eggs)
I get your point about them feeling, germy It’s why I have a huge pile of them. I use them and then toss them in the other pile which goes into the washing machine. I still use paper towels for certain tasks. It’s just I’m down to one roll about every 10-14 days instead of one roll about every 5 days. Big difference is instead of throwing them in the trash after one or two uses like a paper towel. I throw them in the washing machine and reuse them. Even the cheap brands of paper towels, where I live are very expensive. The brand names are unaffordable.
I use regular wash clothes instead of paper. I picked up a bunch of cheap ones years ago. I wash them in the sing and dry them out. Then they go in the laundry when the are used on something that needs a better cleaning.
I may get downvoted for this, but paper towels are one of those few household items that I just can’t compromise on. I get the top of the line Bounty paper towels and I use them for almost everything in the kitchen
I do try and tear off like a quarter sheet if it’s something small, and in general I try and use no more than necessary. But generic brand paper towels/z-fold napkins/kitchen rags just do not work for me for all those reasons you’ve shared
