Happy to help point you in the right direction.

I’m a federal employee and just went through the process of getting approval for a side business.

Honestly, forming the LLC was the easy part. Figuring out what ethics actually cared about was the hard part.

A few things that surprised me:

    • It wasn’t about the business itself as much as who it could touch (conflicts, overlap, etc.)

    • The way you describe what you’re doing matters a lot more than I expected

    • Different reviewers seem to interpret things differently

I ended up having to reword parts of mine even though nothing about the business changed.

If you’re thinking about doing this, it’s definitely doable—but it’s not as straightforward as “just submit the form.”

Curious if anyone here got theirs kicked back or had to revise it?

Starting a side business as a fed — the ethics part was way more confusing than I expected
